Before you leave

A pre-departure checklist — everything to sort, cancel and confirm in the run-up to your leaving date.

Once the decision's made and your visa's secured, this is the run-up. Work backwards from your departure date and tick things off as you go — your progress saves automatically on this device.

1Lock in the essentials

Confirm visas / residency permits are approved for everyone travelling.
Confirm your income + start date, and somewhere to land (permanent or temporary).
Set your departure date — then work backwards from it.
Book travel; check every passport is valid for 6+ months.

2Give notice & wind down work

Resign with the correct notice period — only once visa + income are confirmed in writing.
Agree your handover, references, final pay, bonus and pension.
Sort the trailing partner’s notice, remote-work agreement or job search.
Tell clients/colleagues who need to know, on your own timeline.

3Your home & belongings

Decide whether to sell, rent out or keep your home — and set it in motion.
Get removal/shipping quotes; decide what ships, sells, donates or goes into storage.
Declutter early — the less you move, the cheaper and simpler it gets.
Plan how and when boxes travel vs what you carry with you.

4Schools & children

Give the current school notice; request records, reports and references.
Confirm the new school place + start date, and send the documents they need.
Help the kids say goodbye — to friends, teachers and familiar places.
Pack a comfort bag and “first days” essentials for them.

5Money & banking

Tell your bank you’re moving; check your cards work abroad or open the new account.
Set up a way to move money + handle currency — with a buffer for delays.
Settle or redirect bills, loans, subscriptions and direct debits.
Notify the tax office you’re leaving; understand your final-year tax position.

6Cancel, transfer & redirect

Cancel or transfer utilities, internet, phone, insurance, gym and memberships.
Set up mail redirection or a trusted forwarding address.
Update your address with anyone important (government, employer, banks).
Sort a phone/SIM solution for the day you arrive.

7Health, pets & documents to carry

Get medical + dental check-ups; collect prescriptions and medical records.
Arrange travel/health insurance to cover the gap until you’re set up.
Carry copies (digital + paper) of passports, visas, certificates and key records.
Pets: vaccinations, microchip, import paperwork and transport — all booked.

8The final fortnight & travel day

Confirm flights, transfers and where you’ll sleep on night one.
Pack documents, medication, chargers, valuables and a change of clothes in your carry-on.
Do a final clean, handover and meter readings for your old home.
