Your first 30 days

A settling-in checklist — the essentials for your first month after you arrive.

You've arrived. These are the things that turn a new address into a working life — registrations, banking, healthcare, school and the daily basics. Tick them off as you go; your progress saves automatically on this device.

1The first 48 hours

Get to your accommodation and sort phone/SIM + internet so you’re reachable.
Buy the essentials — food, bedding, basics — and find the nearest shop and pharmacy.
Note local emergency numbers and the nearest hospital.
Rest. Jet lag and overwhelm are normal — pace yourselves.

2Register your arrival (the legal bits)

Complete any required residency registration or report to the authorities.
Apply for your tax number / national ID as needed.
Register your address with the local authority if required.
Keep copies of every registration and reference number.

3Money & banking

Open or activate a local bank account.
Set up local payment methods (card, mobile payments).
Put rent and utilities on direct debit.
Confirm how you’ll get paid and handle ongoing currency transfers.

4Home & utilities

If you’re in temporary digs, start viewings for longer-term housing (contract, deposit).
Set up electricity, water, gas and internet in your name.
Get home / contents insurance.
Learn the practical stuff — bins, recycling, post, parking, building rules.

5Healthcare

Register with the local health system and/or activate your private insurance.
Register with a doctor (GP) and a dentist.
Transfer prescriptions and find your nearest pharmacy.
Note how to get urgent and out-of-hours care.

6Children & school

Get the kids into school and sort uniforms, supplies and transport.
Meet the teachers, share any needs, and learn the school’s routines.
Help them find clubs, sports and friends.
Keep an eye on how they’re settling — emotionally, too.

7Getting around & daily life

Sort transport — a public-transport pass, or check whether your driving licence is valid.
Learn your key routes: work, school, shops, doctor.
Pick up a few local-language basics and cultural norms.
Find your essentials — supermarket, market, post office, hardware shop.

8Settle & connect

Build a routine — it’s the fastest route to feeling at home.
Meet people: neighbours, school parents, local and expat groups.
Update your address everywhere it matters.
Be kind to yourselves — fully “settled” takes months, not days.
