Settling in Cyprus

Healthcare (GeSY), banking, utilities, driving and schools — the know-how to feel at home.

The first few months on the island, made smoother. Work through these as you find your feet — your progress saves automatically on this device.

1Home set-up

Set up electricity (EAC), water and internet in your name.
Service the air-conditioning/heating before summer and winter.
Learn your rubbish and recycling collection days.
Arrange contents insurance and save your landlord/agent contacts.

2Banking & bills

Activate your Cypriot bank account, cards and mobile banking.
Put rent and utilities on direct debit.
Set up how you’ll receive income and move money in euros.
Budget for summer electricity (air-conditioning can be the biggest bill).

3Healthcare (GeSY)

Register with GeSY and choose a personal doctor (GP).
Keep private insurance until GeSY is fully active.
Find your nearest pharmacy and transfer prescriptions.
Save 112 (emergency) and your GP + nearest hospital details.

4Driving & transport

Remember: Cyprus drives on the left.
Check whether your licence is valid or must be exchanged at the Road Transport Department.
Consider buying a car; arrange insurance and road tax (and MOT if applicable).
Learn local parking rules and your everyday routes.

5Children & school life

Confirm the school place, uniform, supplies and transport.
Meet the teachers and learn the routines (the school year runs Sept–June).
Find clubs, sports and activities to help them settle.
Connect with other school families.

6Daily life & admin

Find your local supermarket, market, bakery and hardware shop.
Get a Cypriot mobile SIM or plan (Cyta, Epic, PrimeTel).
Learn opening hours — many places close midday in summer and on Sundays.
Keep digital copies of your key documents handy.

7Language & community

Pick up everyday Greek basics — it’s appreciated, though English is widely spoken in Paphos.
Join expat and local community groups, online and in person.
Explore your area — beaches, villages and tavernas — to feel at home.
Build a local network of neighbours, colleagues and school parents.

8Stay on top of things

Diarise renewal dates — residency, insurance, car.
File tax returns on time; keep receipts and records.
Review your costs after a few months and adjust the budget.
Be patient with yourselves — feeling fully settled takes a season or two.
